Salzburgerland is a region of Austria whose capital is Salzburg. This beautiful area offers vast amounts of superb skiing in the winter and almost everything you could wish for in the summer, from mountain biking and golf to balloon rides and parachute jumping! Needless to say, there is demand for property rental in both the summer and winter months.
We have provided some brief information here to introduce you to this wonderful country and what it has to offer. Click on the links below for further information.
Our properties are located mainly in the Salzburger Sportwelt area which comprises 8 resorts: Flachau, Wagrain, St. Johann-Alpendorf, Radstadt, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Kleinarl, Filzmoos and Eben. It has 100 lifts and 350km of pisted runs. This forms part of the larger Ski Amade ski area (270 lifts, 860km of groomed pistes) which also includes the Hochkönig, Gastein valley, Dachstein-Tauern and Grossarl areas. Furthermore, there are 220km of cross-country trails of which 160km forms a network linking many of the resorts, plus high-altitude trails through stunning scenery such as the one in Filzmoos. The area has an excellent snow record and an extensive snow making network. Floodlit skiing is also available some evenings in Flachau.
There are various types of ski pass available. These include resort specific passes, an area pass “Ski Amade pass”, and for the really adventurous, the Salzburger Super Ski card, which is valid for all the resorts in Salzburgerland and extends as far over as Kitzbuhel!
What’s great about this area is that it more than adequately caters for all levels of skiers and boarders including learning areas for young children and fun parks with jumps and rails; and all this comes with a plentiful supply of mountain restaurants and bars!
Other activities aside from après-ski include the thermal baths in the Gastein valley, horse-sleigh rides in Filzmoos, tobogganing, ice-skating, snow shoe-walking, walking trails…
Apart from the stunning scenery, summer in Salzburgerland is more a question of “what can’t I do here?”! For those seeking active pursuits, there are over 3000km of mountain biking including bike parks and World Cup downhill courses (Schladming and Saalbach-Hinterglemm); there are 11 lakes which allow sailing and surfing; there is also kayaking, canoeing and rafting; for aerial thrills, there is parachuting and balloon rides; there is also horse-riding, fishing, nordic walking, mountain trails and so on… For those seeking culture there is the beautiful city of Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace, with its renowned summer festival.
The Salzburger Sportwelt itself, where most of out properties are located, has 1,000km of hiking trails, 500km of mountain bike trails, a new downhill mountain bike course in Wagrain, two riverside bicycle trails, 200km of horse riding trails, 10 chairlifts/gondolas open in summer, bathing lakes (such as the picturesque one at Seestüberl (see webcam on http://www.seestueberl.com/) near Flachau, swimming pools, and 9-hole and 18-hole golf courses.
Fortunately Salzburgerland is becoming more and more accessible as the number of scheduled (both low-cost and national carriers) and chartered flights to Salzburg airport continually increases. It is also possible to fly to Munich (about 2.5 hours away by car). Furthermore, the Salzburger Sportwelt is only 60km from Salzburg, most of which is by motorway.
There are the usual car hire companies at the airport. However, check what time they close as evening arrivals may result in an out-of-hours charge.
There is also a shuttle service from the airport http://www.habersatter-reisen.at/ to various resorts (see under services “taxiunternehmen”).
Buses run regularly to the centre of Salzburg which stop at the railway station. Tickets for these and regional travel can be bought at a machine across the car park on front of the airport terminal.
Public transport is reliable and well integrated in Austria. Times of trains and buses can be found on the ÖBB website.
